Also called "Kurikata" (molding). A technique for creating curved pleats in the details of architecture or furniture. The concave parts create dark areas, and the convex parts create a sense of volume and elegance, depending on the design. It was used in Egypt from around 3000 BC and developed in ancient Greek architecture. It was used extensively in the details of classical architecture and became standardized, but today it has gone beyond this stylistic meaning and is used with a modern sensibility as a design technique. 刳形 (くりかた) ともいう。建築あるいは家具調度などの細部で主として曲線によるひだ状の加工を行うもの。凹部が暗部をつくり,凸部のふくらみとともに,そのデザインによって量感や優美さなどさまざまな効果を生む。エジプトでは前 3000年頃から使われ,古代ギリシア建築で発展。古典建築ではその細部に多用され定型化したが,現在ではそうした様式的なものを超えて,デザインの一技法として現代的な感覚で用いられる。
