An ancient Roman city in northeastern Gaul, now Trier, Germany. It was founded by Julius Caesar after he conquered the local Treveri during the Gallic Wars (58-51 BC) and was named by Emperor Augustus in 15 BC. It had become a colony by the time of Emperor Claudius I (reigned 41-54). Located on the Moselle River, it rapidly rose to become a transportation, trade, and administrative center, and was the seat of the emperor during the Tetrarchy period in the early 4th century and a Christian bishopric, which was elevated to archbishopric in the 9th century.
