… Based on this reflection, a fierce anti-French movement in comparative literature was born in the United States after the war. In this emerging superpower, where many ethnicities and cultures coexist and new ideas unconstrained by old traditions are accepted, active theoretical and practical attempts were developed, centered on researchers who had immigrated from Europe, such as René Wellek (1903- ) and Erich Auerbach (1892-1957). This American school introduced methods from a variety of related fields, such as prewar Russian formalism, American New Criticism, linguistics, and rhetoric, to analyze the internal structure of literary works on the one hand, and then to construct a general theory of literature, and on the other hand, from such a structural analysis and general theory perspective, to macroscopically survey the similarities and correspondences between literary works that have not had direct contact with each other, in the direction of so-called comparative research, thus developing an ambitious and challenging field. …
