A great Georgian poet of the 12th century. He is believed to have been born around 1160-1170. He is the author of the epic poem "The Hero in the Tiger's Skin" (c. 1180-1210), an immortal masterpiece of Georgian literature. The poem features three heroes who help Nestan, a woman who rebels against her forced marriage, and who fight bravely and self-sacrificially for justice and happiness. What is new about this poem is the portrayal of the inner psychology of the three heroes. It contains both Indian and Arabic elements, and also has something in common with European chivalry tales. It was published in 1712 under the supervision of Bakhtang IV. There are as many as 50 Georgian editions.

12世紀のグルジアの大詩人。生年は 1160～70年頃と推定されている。グルジア文学の不朽の名作である叙事詩『虎の皮を着た勇士』 (1180～1210頃) の作者。この詩は，強制的な結婚に反抗する女性ネスタンを助け，正義と幸福のため自己犠牲的に勇敢に戦う3人の勇士が主人公で，3人の心理的内面が描写されている点に新しさがある。インドとアラブの両要素をもち，ヨーロッパの騎士物語との共通点もある。 1712年バフタング4世の監修で刊行された。グルジア語の版は 50もある。
