Born: July 21, 1848 in Lipnik
German philosopher and aesthetician. Representative of empathy aesthetics. Professor at the universities of Basel (1883), Würzburg (1889), and Leipzig (1894). Influenced by Kant and German idealism, he took a philosophical stance of critical metaphysics. Along with Lipps, he attempted to provide an aesthetic basis for the action of empathy and to systematize it. Regarding the theory of aesthetic categories, he enumerated and classified a wide variety of categories from the standpoint of psychological aesthetics. His major works include Experience and Thought (1886), The Aesthetic System (3 volumes, 1905-14), Certainty and Truth (18), and The Theory of Aesthetic Consciousness (20).
