In the late 18th century, King Charles III of Spain established a new system of administrative reform in the American colonies. It is translated as "inspector". It was originally an adaptation of the French Intendant system, but it aimed to centralize local administration and strengthen direct royal control, replacing the corrupt Corregidor (viceroy, head of a small administrative district under the governor) and Alcade Mayor (mayor elected by the city council). The Intendente's main duties were to collect taxes and inspect finances, but its authority was expanded to include judicial, administrative, and military functions.
