French painter. Born in Barragny, Oise. After spending his childhood in Brussels, he moved to Paris in 1912. After serving in World War I, he was influenced by Derain and Gris and produced Cubist-style works. In 1923, he formed friendships with Breton, Leiris, Miro, and Aragon, and, although he often estranged himself from them, he was active as a Surrealist painter. He incorporated automatism (automatic writing) into his paintings early on, and created magical, dreamlike worlds using zoological and mythological imagery. He stayed in the United States from 1941 to 1945, and had a significant influence on the formation of American painting after the war. His representative works include "The Battle of the Fishes" (1927, Museum of Modern Art, New York).
