In the Edo period, privileged merchants had access to the government offices and mansions of the shogunate and various feudal domains, and supplied their needs. They were also called goyokiki (official servants), goyō merchants (official merchants), or omakanai (official food). The main types of merchants were the shogunate's gold and silver zain (financial accountants), the gold and silver exchange corps, the government's kimono makers and confectioners, the kakeya (official storekeepers), kuramoto (storekeepers), and fudasashi (paper brothels) of the various feudal domains and samurai. There were also craftsmen such as tatami makers, joiners, lacquerers, and painters who handled daily necessities and luxury goods. Many were allowed to use their surnames and carry swords, and were given rice allowances and mansions, and some used their business privileges to amass great wealth. From the mid-Edo period onwards, due to financial difficulties of the shogunate and various feudal domains, they were increasingly required to pay government taxes, and some daimyo-gashi (feudal lenders) such as Konoike in Osaka and Mitani in Edo became deeply involved in the financial policies of the shogunate and various feudal domains. With the collapse of the shogunate-han system, most of them went into ruin. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
