...When the new university system was established, there were 24 degrees, and under the old system there were 12. The current bachelor's degree system was imported from the bachelor system given to university graduates in Europe and the United States. However, the bachelor's degree system did not appear in the Japanese university system until the 1872 (Meiji 5) Educational System, when, following the model of the ancient Ritsuryo system, it was one of the degrees awarded to university graduates, along with doctorate and doctoral degree.
