…the German-Austrian alliance, which existed between Germany and Austria from 1879 to 1918, was a defensive alliance against Russia. It is also called the Zweibund or the German-Austrian Alliance. After the Congress of Berlin in 1878, relations between Germany and Russia deteriorated, so Bismarck strengthened ties with Austria, and on October 7, 1879, a secret military alliance between the two countries was signed in Vienna.
