Born October 4, 1927 in Tokyo, Japan
[Died] June 8, 2007. Tokyo, Sumida Kanze School, shite actor. Second son of Kanze Tetsunojyo 7th (Masayuki). Studied under his father Masayuki, grandfather Kanze Kasetsu, Kita Roppeita 14th, Goto Tokuzo, and others. Debuted in 1931 in Shimai of "Roimatsu". Debuted as shite in 1934 in "Tadanobu". In 1949, he transferred to the Kita School, was adopted by Goto Tokuzo, and changed his surname to Goto. In 1953, he formed the Hana no Kai with his elder brother Kanze Hisao and younger brother Shizuo (later Kanze Tetsunojyo 8th), and later added three roles (supporting, kyogen, and musicians) and worked as a coterie organization. In 1956, he premiered "Dojoji". In 1958, he left the Nohgaku Association and left the Nohgaku world. He returned to the Kanze family name and participated in the modern theatre companies Young Art Theatre and Jiyugeki Theatre, where he was in charge of directing. He also directed operas and dance, and appeared as an actor in plays and films. In 1970, together with modern theatre actors and directors, he formed Mei-no-kai, an association with the goal of creating new theatre, and became a member of it. He returned to the Kanze school in 1979. He premiered Sotsuba Komachi in 1986, Higaki in 1997, and Obasute in 2004. In 1997, he received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize. He presided over Yu-no-kai, and was a member of Sarugaku-no-za. He pursued a form of Noh that transcends tradition and lives in the modern age. His books include From Hana to Yu: An Autobiography of Kanze Hideo (2007). (→Noh)

観世流,シテ方の能楽師。7世観世銕之丞(雅雪)の二男。父雅雪,祖父観世華雪,14世喜多六平太,後藤得三などに師事。1931年『老松』の仕舞で初舞台。1934年『忠信』で初シテ。1949年に喜多流に転流し,後藤得三の芸事養子となり後藤と改姓。1953年,兄観世寿夫,弟静夫(のちの8世観世銕之丞)とともに華の会を結成し,のちに三役(ワキ方・狂言方・囃子方)を加えて同人組織として活動。1956年『道成寺』を初演。1958年に能楽協会を退会して能楽界を離脱。観世姓に戻り,新劇の劇団青年芸術劇場や自由劇場に参加して演出を担当。オペラ,舞踊などの演出も手がけ,俳優としても演劇や映画に出演した。1970年,新劇の俳優,演出家らとともに,新しい演劇の創造を目的とする冥の会を結成,同人となる。1979年に観世流に復帰。1986年『卒都婆小町』,1997年『檜垣』,2004年『姨捨』を初演。1997年度芸術選奨文部大臣賞を受賞。幽の会を主宰。申楽乃座の同人。伝承を越えて現代に生きる能を追求した。著書に『華より幽へ 観世榮夫自伝』(2007)がある。(→能)
