A semi-drying oil obtained from cottonseeds after the cotton fiber has been removed. Cotton is mainly produced in the United States, India, and China. The oil is extracted by pressing and solvent extraction. The seeds contain 15-35% oil, and the kernels 35-40%. Melting point 4°C to -6°C. Iodine value 90-120. Saponification value 190-200. The component fatty acids are 35-55% linoleic acid, 15-35% oleic acid, and 20-30% solid fatty acids. Since there is a considerable amount of solid fatty acids, winter oil can be obtained by cooling to precipitate them and filtering them. It is mainly used as an edible oil. It is also used in margarine. The oil cake makes a good fertilizer. [Kazuo Fukuzumi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
