Japanese hymns have made rapid progress since the first hymnbook appeared in 1874 (Meiji 7). In 1903, the Hymn Committee was organized, and the Japanese literature scholar Umenosuke Bessho (1871-1945) and the British missionary G. Allchin (1852-1935) unified the songbooks that had been compiled separately by each group, resulting in the creation of the Hymns, which included 483 songs in total.
