A ship equipped with icebreaking equipment that was used in Antarctic observation. 2734 gross tons (3869 tons displacement), 79.8m long, 12.8m wide, 9.3m deep. Maximum speed 13.1 knots, cruising speed 12.6 knots. Launched in June 1938 at Kawaminami Kogyo Koyagijima Shipyard as an ice-resistant cargo ship and named Jiryo Maru, it was chartered by the Navy in January 1940 and renamed the special service ship Soya. After World War II, it was used as a repatriation ship, and from the end of 1949, it became a lighthouse supply ship for the Japan Coast Guard. In November 1955, in time for the International Geophysical Year, it was extensively remodeled as an icebreaker for Antarctic observation, and carried the Antarctic observation team from the first in 1956 to the sixth in 1962, and from 1963, it was used as a patrol ship for security and rescue operations in the northern seas. In 1979 it was sold to the Ship Science Museum Foundation and is now preserved there. 南極観測で活躍した砕氷設備をもつ船。 2734総t (排水量 3869t) ,長さ 79.8m,幅 12.8m,深さ 9.3m。速力は最高 13.1ノット,巡航 12.6ノット。 1938年6月耐氷型貨物船として川南工業香焼島造船所で進水し,『地領丸』と命名されたが,40年1月海軍の用船となり,特務艦『宗谷』と改名した。第2次世界大戦後,引揚げ船として活動,49年末から海上保安庁灯台補給船となる。 55年 11月,国際地球観測年にあたり南極観測用砕氷船として大改造され,翌 56年の第1次から 62年の第6次までの南極観測隊を運び,63年からは巡視船として北方海域で警備救難業務についた。 79年からは財団法人「船の科学館」に払下げられ,保存されている。
