It is a branch of Hudson Bay on the border between Ontario and Quebec, Canada. It extends about 400 km south of Hudson Bay. It is about 220 km from east to west. It is covered with ice in winter. There are several small islands in the bay, including Akimiski Island. The west side of the bay is the Hudson Bay lowlands, while the east and south sides give way to the gently undulating Canadian Shield, made of granite and gneiss. The bay coast is a transition zone where coniferous forests change to tundra. A railway runs through Moosonee on the south coast of the bay. It was discovered by Henry Hudson in 1610 and named after James Thomas of England, who explored it in 1631.
