The chemical formula is H 3 PO 3 . It is not known to exist as a free acid, even in aqueous solutions. Known esters include phosphite, P(OR) 3. What was once called phosphorous acid is actually phosphonic acid, H 2 PHO 3. Phosphonic acid is obtained by hydrolysis of phosphorus trichloride. In the laboratory, it is made by dissolving it in carbon tetrachloride, slowly dripping water into it while cooling with ice, and then removing the hydrochloric acid. It forms colorless, deliquescent ice crystals. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
