The concept of mental representation plays a fundamental role in classical cognitive science. Originally, cognitive science sought to establish scientific knowledge about the human mind by rejecting the overly ascetic methodology of psychology in the latter half of the 20th century and by utilizing the structure and operation of electronic computers, which were experiencing rapid development at the time, as metaphors in the study of human mental activity. In this context, the concept of mental representation plays an important role both historically and methodologically.

心的表象という概念は，古典的な認知科学において基本的な役割を果たしている。認知科学は，元来，人間の心的な活動の研究にあたって，20世紀後半の心理学の過度に禁欲的な方法論を排するとともに，折りから発達が著しかった電子計算機の構成や動作を比喩として活用することによって，人間の心に関する科学的知見を確立しようとするものであった。そのような流れのなかで，歴史的にも方法論的にも，重要な役割を果たす概念が心的表象の概念である。
