The concept of mental representation plays a fundamental role in classical cognitive science. Originally, cognitive science sought to establish scientific knowledge about the human mind by rejecting the overly ascetic methodology of psychology in the latter half of the 20th century and by utilizing the structure and operation of electronic computers, which were experiencing rapid development at the time, as metaphors in the study of human mental activity. In this context, the concept of mental representation plays an important role both historically and methodologically. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
