Pannini - Pannini (English spelling) Giovanni Paolo Pannini

Pannini - Pannini (English spelling) Giovanni Paolo Pannini

Italian painter. Also known as Panini. Born in Piacenza in northern Italy, he first studied stage design in Bologna before settling in Rome around 1717. His unique style of painting earned him a place in the world of painting, and he began to paint commemorative paintings for festivals and ceremonies. From 1718 to 1725, he worked on the decoration of the Patrizi family's villa, and it was from this time that he gained fame as a so-called streetscape painter (vedutista). In particular, he encouraged the rise of Canaletto and Piranesi as the greatest 18th century painter who used landscapes of ruins as a motif. His representative works include the pair of paintings "Ancient Rome" and "Renaissance Rome" (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). He died in Rome.
