1863‐1942 British architect and designer. One of the driving forces behind the Arts and Crafts Movement. Born in Isleworth, he studied at Cambridge, and worked for the architect G.F. Bodley (1827-1907). In 1888, he founded the Handicraft Guild and its associated school. At the guild, he designed silverware, furniture, and other items. After the guild was dissolved, he devoted himself to architecture, and while his freewheeling activities attracted attention both at home and abroad, he also worked to introduce FL Wright. He also founded the Essex House Press, modelled on the Kelmscott Press. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
