Charles Robert Ashbee

British architect and designer. One of the driving forces behind the Arts and Crafts Movement. Born in Isleworth, he studied at Cambridge, and worked for the architect G.F. Bodley (1827-1907). In 1888, he founded the Handicraft Guild and its associated school. At the guild, he designed silverware, furniture, and other items. After the guild was dissolved, he devoted himself to architecture, and while his freewheeling activities attracted attention both at home and abroad, he also worked to introduce FL Wright. He also founded the Essex House Press, modelled on the Kelmscott Press.

イギリスの建築家，デザイナー。アーツ･アンド･クラフツ･ムーブメントの推進者の一人。アイズルワースに生まれ，ケンブリッジで学んだ後，建築家ボドリーG.F.Bodley(1827‐1907)の下で働く。1888年，ハンディクラフト･ギルドとそれに付属する学校を設立。ギルドで銀製品や家具などのデザインに当たる。ギルド解散後，建築に専念し自由な活動で内外に注目される一方，F.L.ライトの紹介にも努めた。また，ケルムスコット･プレスにならって，エセックス･ハウス･プレスを設立した。
