...Around August and September, the apex of the stem and the nearby nodes produce densely packed, radiating heads of scarlet, lip-shaped flowers that look like burning torches, hence the Japanese name. The wild bergamot, M. fistulosa L., is native to North America and grows to a height of about 1m. Its stalks are obtuse and resemble those of the Japanese bergamot, but its flowers are purple and the stems and leaves have a strong fragrance. Its name comes from the fact that the flowers grow in an arrow-shaped pattern. ...
