Kurashiki [city] - Kurashiki

Japanese: 倉敷[市] - くらしき
Kurashiki [city] - Kurashiki
This city occupies the lower reaches of the Takahashi River and part of the Kojima Peninsula in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1928, and merged with the cities of Kojima and Tamashima in 1967. The Sanyo Main Line, Shinkansen, Hakubi Line, Seto Ohashi Line, Sanyo Expressway, and Setouchi Chuo Expressway are all located here. The Kurashiki area developed rapidly after the establishment of Kurashiki Spinning Mill (now Kurabo) in 1888, and became a textile industrial city in 1926 with the establishment of Kurashiki Silk (now Kuraray). In 1964, the area was designated a new industrial city, and a heavy chemical industrial zone was formed around the Mizushima area. In recent years, it has come to account for almost half of the total industrial shipment value in the prefecture. Local industries include the manufacture of flower mats, tatami mat coverings, and sewing of school uniforms. The area around the Kurashiki River, where the magistrate's office once stood, prospered as a place of rice tax shipment for the Bitchu Tenryo. Rice warehouses remain, and the area has been designated as a national preservation district for groups of traditional buildings, attracting many tourists. There are the Ohara Museum of Art, Okayama University Institute of Bioresource Science, Kurashiki Folk Crafts Museum, and Archaeological Museum. Mt. Washu is a scenic spot included in the Setonaikai National Park. In August 2005, Funao Town, Asakuchi District, and Mabi Town, Kibi District were incorporated. 355.63 km2 . 475,513 people (2010).
