It was once considered an independent species, but in recent years many consider it to be a subspecies of the Asian wild ass E. hemionus (English name: Asiatic wild ass). It stands about 1.1m at the shoulder and weighs 200-250kg. Its body shape is intermediate between that of a donkey and a horse, with longer limbs and slightly shorter ears than a donkey.
