Year of death: Tempo 14.8.15 (1843.9.8) Year of birth: July 7, 1786 (July 31, 1786) A Shinshu Buddhist monk from the late Edo period. He is known for his linguistic analysis of the sacred teachings of Shinshu. Born to the Tojo clan, his Buddhist name was Reiden. He was the son of Denzui and Nui of Myogen-ji Temple in Wakasa Province (Fukui Prefecture). In 1802, he entered the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple school and studied under Reiyo of Yonen-ji Temple. Feeling the need for linguistic studies in interpreting the sacred teachings, he began studying under Fujii Kosho from around 1811, and also sought instruction from Motoori Shuntei. He also studied phonology under Ota Zensai and others in Edo. In 1832, he lectured on the Three Pure Land Sutras and Yuishinsho at Hojun-ji Temple in Wakasa Province, interpreting the scattered and ancient readings of Shinran and previous scholars from a linguistic perspective. His works include "Shinshu Sacred Teachings in Japanese" and "Namanona". <References> "Collection of Letters from Tojo Gimon", "Research on Gimon" by Miki Yukinobu (Kusano Akiyuki) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
