A town in southwestern Kenya. Capital of Rift Valley Province. Located about 150km northwest of Nairobi, on the north shore of Lake Nakuru. During the colonial period, the town had many European residents. It is a distribution center for wheat, sisal, coffee, and other crops produced in the area, and is also home to food processing companies. It is a key transportation hub. Lake Nakuru, one of the lakes in the Great Rift Valley, is a slightly salty lake containing soda and is known for its diverse birdlife, especially flamingos. In 2011, Lake Nakuru and two neighboring lakes were registered as natural World Heritage sites. Population: 256,300 (2004 estimate).
