Sandakan - Sandakan (English spelling)

A port city on the east coast of Sabah (North Borneo) in eastern Malaysia. Population: 206,800 (2001 estimate). Located on the north shore of Sandakan Bay, facing the Sulu Sea. The deep waters of the harbor make it a good natural harbor, and it was the capital of the former British colony of North Borneo. It was destroyed by fire during World War II, but was completely rebuilt after the war. In particular, the vast forests in the hinterland have led to it prospering as a shipping port for timber bound for Japan, and it is also called "Mini Hong Kong." Many overseas Chinese live here. Sepilok Forest, 25 kilometers away on the outskirts, is famous as the habitat of the world's largest orangutan. It is also known as the setting for "Sandakan Brothel No. 8," written by Tomoko Yamazaki. Malaysia Airlines operates flights from Kota Kinabalu.

マレーシア東部、サバ州（北ボルネオ）東岸の港市。人口約20万6800（2001推計）。サンダカン湾の北岸に位置し、スル海に臨む。港内の水深は深く天然の良港をなし、旧イギリス領時代はその北ボルネオ植民地の首都でもあった。第二次世界大戦では戦火を被ったが、戦後は完全に復興した。ことに後背地には広大な森林地帯を控えるので、近年は日本向け木材の積出し港として繁栄し、「ミニ香港(ホンコン)」ともよばれている。華僑(かきょう)の居住も多い。25キロメートル離れた郊外のセピロックの森は世界最大のオランウータンの生息地として有名である。山崎朋子(ともこ)原作の『サンダカン八番娼館(しょうかん)』の舞台としても知られている。コタ・キナバルからマレーシア航空が就航している。
