Gaun's Daily Record

Japanese:
Gaun's Daily Record

This is the diary of Zuikei Shuho, a Five Mountain monk in the Muromachi period. The name "Nichigenroku" was given by Zuikei himself based on the legend of Enju, which says that "he records his deeds one hundred and eight times a day." Originally, there were 74 volumes written from 1446 (Bun'an 3) until just before his death in 1473 (Bunmei 5), and they were called "Hokuzen Nichigenroku" and "Jusei Nichigenroku" after his dormitory, but the original diary was lost and only one volume, "Gaun Nichigenroku Batsuyu", was excerpted by Iko Myoan in 1562 (Eiroku 5). The name is based on Zuikei's other name "Gaun Sanjin". Zuikei had many dealings with important people in both the imperial court and the military as the Rokuon Soroku (Record of the Monks of the Rokuon period), and conveys the historical facts from the period when the Inryoken Nichiroku (Record of the Daily Life of Inryoken) was left unfinished, making it a valuable source for political and Zen history, but the Nuyou (Record of Nuyou) focuses on anecdotes about famous monks and writers who recall the good old days of the Gozan period, as well as articles about the literary activities of the time. In particular, the excerpts of passages from various classics that Zuikei wrote on the inside cover of his original diary are also included in the Nuyou (Record of Nuyou), providing an excellent source for the history of the arts and sciences of the Gozan period. It is included in the Dai Nihon Kokiroku (Records of Ancient Japan) and the Zoku Shiseki Shuran (Collection of Historical Documents).3
