A skirt-like waist garment worn by the early inhabitants of Mesopotamia. It was apparently originally made of sheepskin, but by the end of the 3rd millennium BC it had become a woolen fabric woven so that tassels of hair hung down. Women usually wore it like a shawl, draping it over the left shoulder. It is believed to have survived since the Third Dynasty of Ur only as symbolic clothing for gods and goddesses, but later Assyrian clothing also had tassels of hair hanging down, and the influence of Kaunakes can be seen.
