The name of a street at the southern end of Manhattan, New York City (approximately 6 km from Broadway to the East River). The name Wall Street is said to come from a defensive wall built in 1653 by then Governor Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672) to protect Dutch colonists from the natives (American Indians) and foreign enemies. As the New York Stock Exchange is located nearby and the area is famous as the financial center of America, "Wall Street" is often used as a synonym for American finance and the securities market.

Pre-1980s

Wall Street started out as a trading market for European commodities, but after independence in 1783, securities trading began, mainly for government bonds and bank stocks, and the market gradually shifted its focus to finance and securities trading. In particular, the New York Stock Exchange (the predecessor to the New York Stock Exchange) was established in 1817, and after that, with the construction of railroads, investment banks such as Morgan and Kuhn Loeb became active, mainly in railroad stock trading, and Wall Street gained a reputation as a securities trading center. After World War I, Wall Street flourished with the stock market boom, but then entered a dark age with the Great Depression, which began with the stock market crash in October 1929. The reconstruction and development of the finance and securities markets was achieved during the New Deal period, and after World War II, as America's international status improved, Wall Street also became even more important as the center of the international financial market.

Black Monday

As the international presence of the American economy grew, stock prices in various countries had been rising since the mid-1980s, due to the neoliberal policies of US President Reagan and British Prime Minister Thatcher, as well as an optimistic view of the future of the economy. However, this optimistic economy could not continue forever, and in October 1987, a stock market crash originated on Wall Street. This was known as "Black Monday." This stock market crash originated on Wall Street and quickly spread around the world, causing major stock price indexes in various countries to fall significantly across the board. However, learning from the experience of 1929, each country implemented large-scale monetary easing policies, so the impact on the real economy was not too serious.

Subprime mortgage problem

Although stock prices continued to fluctuate wildly after that, a large amount of money began to flow into the United States, with the United States' "strong dollar policy" as the world's current account surplus financed the United States' huge deficit. The inflow of funds supported housing investment in the United States, which grew by 5 to 10% from 2002 to 2005 compared to the previous year. In addition, the strong housing investment led to an increase in housing prices, and domestic capital circulation became active through systems such as home equity loans secured by the net asset value of the home, which expanded domestic demand such as consumption, further boosting the American economy. In addition, the New York Dow Jones Industrial Average and NASDAQ, which are representative American stock price indexes, continued to rise, and Wall Street strengthened its presence as the center of the international financial market.

This housing boom, driven by excessive expectations for rising house prices and the development of financial technologies such as securitization, led to the sudden spread of subprime loans and other loan schemes that were devised to provide loans to people who would not otherwise be able to take out home loans. At the same time, mortgage-backed securities secured by subprime loans and collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) that were resecuritized using these as collateral also became popular, primarily among banks and hedge funds seeking high returns.

As the S&P Case-Shiller Home Price Index (US Home Price Index) shows, house prices continued to rise almost consistently from 1987 to the second quarter of 2006. However, after the second half of 2006, prices started to gradually decline, and the prices of highly leveraged financial products such as CDOs (Common Dealers Instruments) began to plummet. Then, in 2007, as this trend became more pronounced, stock prices around the world, including the New York market, fell sharply after the collapse of a hedge fund under Bear Stearns, a major US securities firm, and the freezing of mutual funds under the bank's umbrella by BNP Paribas, a major French bank. This is commonly known as the "subprime mortgage problem."

The subprime mortgage problem continued to spread to other countries, causing losses mainly in European and American financial institutions, and in September 2008, Lehman Brothers, a major American securities firm with a long history, suddenly went bankrupt (the so-called "Lehman Shock"). This caused American stock prices to plummet, spreading around the world and resulting in a global recession. The Lehman Shock also led to the temporary nationalization of the major American insurance company AIG, and the mergers and acquisitions of American banks. In addition, major securities firms such as Goldman Sachs were suddenly transformed into bank holding companies that were more likely to receive support and management from the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) in order to ensure liquidity, dramatically changing the balance of power on Wall Street.

ニューヨーク市マンハッタンの南端にある街路（ブロードウェーからイースト・リバーに至る約6キロメートル）の名称。ウォール街の名称は、1653年に当時の総督スタイベサントPeter Stuyvesant（1592―1672）が、植民者オランダ人を先住民（アメリカ・インディアン）や外敵から守るために築いた防壁に由来するといわれている。この付近には、ニューヨーク証券取引所がありアメリカの金融中心地として有名であることから、「ウォール街」はしばしばアメリカ金融・証券市場の代名詞として使用される。

1980年代以前

ウォール街は当初ヨーロッパ商品の取引市場として出発したが、独立後の1783年に公債や銀行株を中心に証券取引が始まり、市場の中心はしだいに金融・証券取引へ移行していった。とくに1817年にニューヨーク証券取引会所（ニューヨーク証券取引所の前身）が設立され、その後鉄道建設に伴い鉄道株取引を中心にモルガン、クーンローブなどの投資銀行の事業が活発となり、ウォール街は証券取引の中心地としてその名を高めた。第一次世界大戦後は株式ブームとなってウォール街は活況を呈したが、1929年10月の株価暴落に始まる大恐慌により暗黒時代を迎えた。金融・証券市場の再建整備はニューディール期に達成され、第二次世界大戦後は、アメリカの国際的地位の向上とともに、ウォール街も国際金融市場の中心地として、重要性をいっそう高めていった。

ブラック・マンデー

アメリカ経済の国際的なプレゼンス（存在）が高まるなか、アメリカの大統領レーガンやイギリスの首相サッチャーなどの新自由主義的な政策運営に加え、経済の先行きに対する楽観的な見方から、1980年なかば以降、各国ともに株価の上昇が続いていた。しかしこのような楽観的な経済がいつまでも続くわけがなく、1987年10月にウォール街発の株価暴落が起こった。いわゆる「ブラック・マンデー」である。ウォール街発のこの株価暴落はまたたくまに世界中に波及し、各国の主要な株価指数は軒並み大幅に下落した。しかし、1929年の経験を生かし、各国ともに大規模な金融緩和政策を行ったことで、実体経済に対する影響はそれほど深刻なものにはならなかった。

サブプライムローン問題

その後も株価は幾度かの乱高下を続けたものの、アメリカの「強いドル政策」を背景にして、世界の経常収支の黒字がアメリカの巨額な赤字をファイナンス（資金調達）する形でアメリカに多額の資金が流入するようになった。流入した資金はアメリカ内の住宅投資を支え、2002～2005年の住宅投資は前年比5～10％という高い伸びとなった。また旺盛(おうせい)な住宅投資によって住宅価格が上昇するとともに、住宅の純資産価値を担保としたホーム・エクイティローンなどの仕組みを通じて国内の資金循環が活発化し、消費など国内需要が拡大したことから、アメリカ経済をさらに押し上げることになった。また、アメリカの代表的な株価指数であるニューヨーク・ダウ工業株価やNASDAQ(ナスダック)なども上昇を続け、ウォール街は国際金融市場の中心地としての存在感を強めていった。

　このような住宅ブームは、住宅価格の上昇に対する過度な期待や証券化等の金融技術の発展を背景にして、本来ならば住宅ローンを組むことのできないような層への貸出スキーム（仕組み）としてサブプライムローンなどが考案されたことから急激に普及した。また同時に、サブプライムローンを担保とする住宅ローン担保証券やそれを担保に再証券化した債務担保証券Collateralized Debt Obligation（CDO）も高利回りを求める銀行やヘッジファンドを中心に広く投資されるようになった。

　住宅価格はその後も、S&Pケースシラー住宅価格指数（アメリカの住宅価格指数）でも明らかなように、1987年から2006年第2四半期まではほぼ一貫して上昇していた。しかし2006年後半以降、徐々に低下するようになるにしたがい、CDO等のレバレッジ（少ない資金で何倍もの効果を追求すること）の高い金融商品の価格が急落するようになった。そして2007年に入り、この動きが顕著になってくるなか、アメリカの大手証券会社ベアー・スターンズ傘下のヘッジファンドの破綻(はたん)やフランス大手銀行のビー・エヌ・ピー・パリバ（BNPパリバ）が同行傘下のミューチュアルファンド（小口資金を分散投資する投資信託の一つ）を解約凍結したことなどを受け、ニューヨーク市場を含む世界中の株価が大きく下落した。これは一般に「サブプライムローン問題」とよばれている。

　このサブプライムローン問題はその後も各国に波及したことから、欧米の金融機関を中心に損失が拡大し、2008年9月に長い歴史をもつアメリカ大手証券会社リーマン・ブラザーズが突如破綻した（いわゆる「リーマン・ショック」）。これによりアメリカ株価は暴落し、世界中に伝播(でんぱ)するとともに、その後の世界的な同時不況をもたらした。また、このリーマン・ショックによって、アメリカ大手保険会社AIGが一時国有化されるとともにアメリカの銀行も吸収合併等が進み、加えて、ゴールドマン・サックス等の大手証券会社も流動性確保のためアメリカ連邦準備制度理事会（FRB）からの支援と管理が受けやすい銀行持株会社に急遽(きゅうきょ)移行するなど、ウォール街の勢力図も大きく変化した。
