A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Flathead. It is found in the Pacific coast south of Aomori Prefecture, and in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, including the Sea of ​​Japan, East China Sea, Yellow Sea, and Bohai Sea south of Akita Prefecture. Its head is flat from top to bottom and its ventral surface is flat. The preoperculum on the side of its head has two to three spines, the top one of which protrudes long and spear-like. There are three small spines on the protuberance below the eye. Its body is dark brown with five dark horizontal stripes and many small black spots. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of about 200 meters, and feeds on crustaceans and fish. It spawns from spring to summer. It grows to a total length of 12 cm in one year, 30 cm in three years, 40 cm in five years, and 47 cm in eight years, reaching a maximum total length of 50 cm. They function as males when they are 25-30 cm long, but when they reach 35-45 cm long (at age 4-6), they change sex and become female. They are the most common of the flatheads, and are caught in large quantities in bottom trawls in the East China Sea. Their white flesh is used for fries, stews, hotpot dishes, and sashimi.

硬骨魚綱スズキ目コチ科に属する海水魚。青森県以南の太平洋岸と秋田県以南の日本海、東シナ海、黄海、渤海(ぼっかい)などの西太平洋、インド洋に分布する。頭部は上下に平たく、腹面は扁平(へんぺい)。頭部側面の前鰓蓋骨(ぜんさいがいこつ)には棘(とげ)が2~3本あり、最上部のものは槍(やり)状に長く突出する。目の下の隆起に3本の小棘(しょうきょく)がある。体は暗褐色で、5条の暗色の横帯と多数の小さい黒色斑点(はんてん)がある。水深200メートル前後の砂泥底にすみ、甲殻類、魚類などを食べる。産卵期は春~夏。1年で全長12センチメートル、3年で30センチメートル、5年で40センチメートル、8年で47センチメートルほどになり、最大全長50センチメートルに達する。全長25~30センチメートルの時は雄として機能するが、全長35~45センチメートル(4~6歳)に成長すると雌に性転換する。コチ類中では漁獲量が多く、東シナ海では底引網で多量に漁獲される。白身で、フライ、煮物、鍋物(なべもの)、刺身などにされる。
