Ruan Ji -

Japanese:
Ruan Ji -

A Chinese scholar from the Three Kingdoms Wei dynasty. His courtesy name was Sizong. He was from the Weishi clan of Chenliu Commandery (Henan Province). He is known as the leader of the "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove." He was from a noble family of the Later Han dynasty. His father, Ruan Yu (?-212), was one of the Seven Sons of the Jian'an Dynasty and served Cao Cao. Ruan Ji's self-concealment, his love of alcohol and eccentric behavior, had the backbone of Laozi and Zhuangzi thought, but he was also riddled with inner anguish. In the late Wei dynasty, the influence of the Sima clan, who would later establish the royal family of Jin, gradually expanded, and a political crisis erupted with the change of dynasty. Sima had a favorable relationship with Ruan Ji, and Ruan Ji also served as an infantry colonel, but the ugliness of people competing for power deepened Ruan Ji's sense of despair and prompted him to reach a fundamental understanding of Laozi and Zhuangzi thought. "The Biography of the Great Teacher" and "The Treatise on Taoism and Zhuangzi" are his ideological works, and the 80-plus poems in the "Poems in Memory of the Emperor," which became the forerunner of later serial poems, are the confession of a lonely soul.
