[Name]
The term minyo became common in Japan only in the modern era. In the mid-Meiji era, writer Mori Ogai and English literature scholar Ueda Bin used the term minyo as a translation of the German word volkslied and the English word folk song, and Japanese literature scholar Shida Yoshihide, in his 1906 book An Introduction to Japanese Folk Songs, said that minyo means Volkspoesie, or folk songs, as opposed to Kunstpoesie, which means technical poetry or artistic poetry. Since then, works such as Maeda Ringa's Complete Collection of Japanese Folk Songs (1907) and the Children's Song Research Society's Complete Collection of Japanese Folk Songs (1909) have been published, and the term minyo has gradually become more widespread.
