Blue water - Blue water

Japanese: アオミズ - あおみず
Blue water - Blue water
A soft annual plant of the Urticaceae family that grows in damp places in low mountain areas (illustration). Along with the closely related Mizu, P. hamaoi Makino, it is widely distributed throughout Japan and is a very common plant. The stem is 30-50 cm tall, hairless and soft. The leaves are opposite, ovate-elliptical, and 3-10 cm long. Flowers appear in a pair of inflorescences that emerge from the leaf axils in July and August, with the upper inflorescence bearing female flowers and the lower inflorescence bearing male flowers. Fruits are produced in September and October. The number of tepals is an important characteristic in the classification of Mizu, and Aomizu and Mizu are unique among the genus in that male flowers have two tepals (there are usually four in Mizu).
