Auspicious direction - Eho

Japanese: 恵方(吉方) - えほう

In Onmyodo, this is the direction where the God of Yearly Virtue is located. It is also written as Akikata or Tokuho, and is also called Aki no Ho. It is the direction of great luck for that year. The God of Yearly Virtue is said to be in the direction that corresponds to the stem of that year, but in the theory of the five elements, the ten stems are divided into Yin and Yang, with Jia Bing Wu Geng Ren being Yang and Yi Ding Ji Xin Gui being Yin, and the Yang stems are said to have virtue, called Yang Virtue, and the Yin stems are said to have no virtue. Therefore, the Yin stems are each assigned to a Yang stem, and for example, in the year of Tsuchinoto, the God of Yearly Virtue is said to be in the direction of Jia, that is, between the Tiger and the Rabbit (Figure).

陰陽道（おんみようどう）で歳徳神（としとくじん）がいる方角。兄方，得方などとも書き，〈明きの方（あきのかた∥あきのほう）〉ともいう。その年の〈よろず良し〉という大吉の方角である。歳徳神はその年の干（かん）に当たる方角にいるとされるが，五行説では十干を陰陽に分け，甲丙戊庚壬を陽，乙丁己辛癸を陰とし，陽の干は陽徳といって徳があり，陰干は徳がないとする。そこで陰干はそれぞれ陽の干に割りあてられ，たとえば己（つちのと）の年は甲（きのえ）の方角，すなわち寅卯の間に歳徳神がいるとされる(図)。
