…In 1560, Thomas Gresham (1519-79, a trader, exchanger, and banker, who was the financial advisor to the King of England for 23 years) advised Queen Elizabeth that the outflow of good British coins overseas was due to the debasement of the currency. Three centuries later, the British economist Henry Dunning Macleod (1821-1902) named this law Gresham's Law in his book Elements of Political Economy (1858). Even after Gresham's time, examples of this law can be found in the history of coinage reform and the period of bimetallic standard. …
