[raw]? Died 84 BC. Ancona. An ancient Roman politician. Leader of the popular faction. He rose to prominence during the civil war and was consul from 87 to 84 BC. He was in conflict with L. Sulla, who was a tribal faction. While Sulla was away from Rome, he passed a law that made people who had gained citizenship after the civil war belong to the old tribes, but when Sulla returned, this was overturned. Together with G. Marius, he gained the support of Italian cities, marched to Rome, occupied it, and wiped out the senatorial faction. He continued to hold real power even after Marius' death in 86 BC, restored the previous law, reformed economic policy, and realized an alliance between the knights (equites) and the plebs (commoners). In preparation for Sulla's return after winning the Mithradatic War, he planned to attack Sulla, but was killed by a rebellion from his subordinates. His daughter Cornelia was the wife of Julius Caesar. Kinna |
