Troyes

Troyes
The capital of the Aube department in northeastern France. The central city of the former Champagne region. It is located in the southeastern part of the Paris Basin, facing the upper reaches of the Seine and the Haute-Seine Canal. Before Julius Caesar's conquest, it was a Celtic town. It is said that Bishop Lupus dissuaded Attila from invading Troyes during the 5th century invasion. A cathedral was built on his tomb and continued to exist until the French Revolution. In the Middle Ages, it became the capital of the County of Champagne, and regular markets were held in June and October, which led to the development of the textile industry. Today, the clothing-related industries, such as hosiery, silk weaving, and women's socks, have declined, and the main industries are manufacturing and service industries, such as machinery and automobile parts. In addition to the art museum and history museum, there are the 13th century St. Urbain Cathedral, the St. Jean Aumarché Cathedral (14th-17th century) where King Henry V of England married Catherine in 1420, the St. Madeleine Church (12th-14th century), and the Cathedral of St. Pierre et St. Paul (13th-17th century) with its beautiful stained glass. The Peace of Troyes during the Hundred Years' War was signed here. Population: 60,400 (2005 estimate).
