Ghione, E.

...It is said that their performance fees were too high, which resulted in excessive production costs, and producers going bankrupt one after another because of the "goddesses" they had created.
[World War I and Italian Cinema]
Hits such as the serial La Mole (1915-22), directed by and starring Emilio Ghione, seemed to save Italian cinema for a time, but when Italy entered World War I in 1915, the situation took a decisive turn for the worse, and the world's film market was taken over by German and American films (the newly emerging Hollywood quickly conquered Europe and the world with its Westerns and comedies from 1916 to 1917). Furthermore, high society dramas depicting exaggerated passion and adultery did not fit in with the puritanism of America and Britain, and were met with incomprehension and ethical regulations, and were ultimately shut out of the film market in Anglo-Saxon countries. The "divas" also completely disappeared from the screen in the 1920s, and directors who had created the boom in historical films, such as Piero Fosco and Luigi Maggi, also retired early.
