Emperor Murakami held this grand Imperial Palace poetry contest on March 30, 960 (4th year of Tentoku). The ceremony was further refined following the example of the "Teiji-in Poetry Contest" held in 913 (13th year of Engi), and became a model for later generations. The poems consisted of 20 pieces on 12 themes: Mist, Nightingale (2), Willow, Cherry Blossom (3), Yamabuki, Wisteria, Evening Spring, Early Summer, Cuckoo (2), Ubuki Flowers, Summer Grasses, and Love (5). The composers included Fujiwara no Asatada, Minamoto no Tsune, Mibu no Tadami, Onakatomi no Yoshinobu, Taira no Kanemori, Fujiwara no Motomasa, Nakatsukasa, and other leading poets of the time, and Emperor Murakami's excellent taste was evident in the poems, furnishings, clothing colors, and music.
