...The Central Rada, which was established based on the prewar organization of Ukrainian intellectuals, the Association of Ukrainian Progressives, played the role of a de facto Ukrainian autonomous government. Its chairman was the historian Hrushevsky, and its vice-chairmen were the writer Vinnichenko and the literary historian Efremov. The Central Rada achieved Ukrainian autonomy in various fields, but in the process came into fierce conflict with the Russian Provisional Government.
