A village in Yoshino District, southeastern Nara Prefecture. Population 1,370 (1995). Surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters high, including the Omine Mountains to the west, the Kitayama River flows south through the center. The terrain is steep, with forests taking up most of the village area, and settlements scattered along the river. Forestry is the main industry, accounting for 20% of the employed population, but the village is struggling with an outflow of young workers. In recent years, sewing and electronics factories have been moving in to promote revitalization of depopulated areas. Ikehara Dam in the north is an arch-shaped pumped-storage dam completed in 1964, and has become a tourist destination along with the nearby cherry blossom trees, Myojin Pond, and Ikenotaira Park.
