Yellow cover. Published in 1785 (Tenmei 5). Written and illustrated by Santou Kyoden. The title is a play on the Edo specialty of grilled eel. Enjiro, the only son of a millionaire Adakiya, is an ugly but conceited man. Wanting to gain a reputation as a playboy, he gives 50 ryo to a geisha, who rushes into his house claiming to be in love with him, then advertises her in a woodblock print magazine, and even attempts a fake double suicide with a prostitute from Yoshiwara. This is the story of his many foolish attempts to gain fame, all of which end in failure. The book was already so popular that people speculated that there was a real model for Tsuyujirou, but it was not necessarily based on a single person, and Tsuyujirou was a representation of a typical Edo person who was easygoing and sought fame. Following the success of this book, Tsuyujirou was published as a humorous story in 1787, which followed the same character setting.
