A village in Kasai District, Tokachi Subprefecture, southeastern Hokkaido. Population: 3,350 (1995). The village area is mainly alluvial fan developed on the eastern foot of the Hidaka Mountains, and the central town is located about 35 km south of Obihiro. Settlement began in 1890, and the oak forest was cleared to produce charcoal and railroad ties, but the village eventually became primarily agricultural. The development was particularly remarkable after the opening of the Hiroo Line in 1930 (now abandoned), and in 1947 the village was separated from Taisho Village and became independent. Field crops, mainly beans, sugar beets, potatoes, and dairy farming are practiced, and the cultivated land area per farm household is the largest in the Tokachi Subprefecture. 北海道南東部,十勝支庁河西郡の村。人口3350(1995)。村域は日高山脈の東麓に発達した扇状地を主とし,中心市街地は帯広の南方約35kmに位置する。1890年に入植が始まり,カシワの森林をきり開いて,炭焼き,枕木の製造が行われたが,やがて農業を主とする村となった。とくに1930年の広尾線開通(現在は廃線)後の発展は著しく,47年大正村から分村,独立した。豆類,テンサイ,ジャガイモなどを中心とする畑作と酪農が行われ,農家1戸当り経営耕地面積は十勝支庁管内でも最大の規模で,大型機械化が進み,1戸当り農業収入も高水準にある。
