Sarabetsu [village] - Sarabetsu
A village in Kasai District, Tokachi Subprefecture, southeastern Hokkaido. Population: 3,350 (1995). The village area is mainly alluvial fan developed on the eastern foot of the Hidaka Mountains, and the central town is located about 35 km south of Obihiro. Settlement began in 1890, and the oak forest was cleared to produce charcoal and railroad ties, but the village eventually became primarily agricultural. The development was particularly remarkable after the opening of the Hiroo Line in 1930 (now abandoned), and in 1947 the village was separated from Taisho Village and became independent. Field crops, mainly beans, sugar beets, potatoes, and dairy farming are practiced, and the cultivated land area per farm household is the largest in the Tokachi Subprefecture. Large-scale mechanization has progressed, and agricultural income per farm household is also at a high level.
