There are various classification methods for smallpox disease types, including those by Dixon and WHO, as well as those by Ueda and Toyoda in Japan. Here we show the typical symptoms of smallpox in those who have not been vaccinated, that is, variola vera. (1) Prodromal stage: The patient suddenly falls ill with chills, shivers, and high fever, and is also characterized by fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, headache, pain in the limbs, and severe back pain.
