The biggest difference between the approach to generative grammar outlined above and previous approaches to linguistics is, in a word, that it shifted the subject of research in linguistics from language (external language, E-language) to grammar (intrinsic/connotative language, I-language). Here, external language refers to language that exists outside of humans, which was the main subject of research in previous American structuralism, such as recorded speech or written characters on paper.
