Buichi Otani

Japanese: 大谷武一 - おおたにぶいち

1887-1966 A physical education instructor from the Taisho to Showa eras.
Born May 14, 1887. After working as a professor at his alma mater, Tokyo Higher Normal School, he became an engineer at the Ministry of Education's Institute of Physical Education, and in 1930, he was involved in the founding of the Japan Gymnastics Federation. In 1941, he became the first Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education at Tokyo University of Education. He introduced softball and handball to Japan. He became the Chairman of the Japan Physical Education Instructors Association. He passed away on January 29, 1966. He was 78 years old. He was from Hyogo Prefecture.

明治20年5月14日生まれ。母校東京高師の教授をへて,文部省体育研究所技師となり,昭和5年日本体操連盟の創立にかかわる。24年東京教育大初代体育学部長。ソフトボール,ハンドボールを日本に紹介した。日本体育指導者連盟会長。昭和41年1月29日死去。78歳。兵庫県出身。
