The remains of a 6th-8th century Sogdian capital city are located along the banks of the Zerafshan River in Tajikistan, about 70 km east of Samarkand in Central Asia. They are also called Pianjikent. A. Yakubovsky conducted a full-scale survey from 1946, and A. Berenitsky continued planned excavations from 1953 to clarify the overall picture of the capital city's final period. This is an extremely important site for understanding the urban life and culture of the Sogdians in the first half of the 8th century. The capital city consists of the residence of Prince Divashtich, who was the ruling dihkhan, an urban area called Shahristan, a suburban residential area, and a cemetery.
