In March 1839 (the 19th year of the Daoguang Era), Governor Lin Zexu of Huguang arrived in Guangzhou as a special commissioner with the mission of banning opium, and ordered foreign merchants to hand over their opium and to submit a letter of pledge that they would not engage in opium smuggling in the future. C. Elliot, the British government's trade inspector in Guangzhou, finally allowed the opium to be handed over, and Lin Zexu burned the letter on the Humen coast. However, Elliot had British ships refuse to hand over the letter of pledge, and at the same time, he prepared for battle, and in September, they exchanged gunfire with the Qing navy near Kowloon Port, and the Opium War broke out. …
