A tributary on the right bank of the Garonne River in southern France. It is about 375 km long. It originates at Lozère (1,702 m above sea level), the highest peak in the southern Massif Central, flows west and joins the Garonne near Moissac. In the upper reaches, where it separates the Sauveterre and Méjeans plateaus, it forms a deep limestone gorge, and livestock farming (cattle) is thriving in the surrounding area. Grape cultivation is carried out in the middle and lower reaches, and Albi is an industrial center that uses electricity and coal.
