1894‐1959 Soviet mathematician. He made great achievements in function theory, number theory, and probability theory and their applications. He studied at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Moscow University from 1911 to 1916. He began teaching in 1918, and became a professor at Moscow University in 1927. Together with AN Kolmogorov, he built the foundations of the school's glory as the founder of the Moscow school of probability theory. His first paper published in 1916 was on integral theory, and his interest was in analysis for a while, but after 1922 he shifted to number theory and then probability theory. He rigorously proved that for almost all numbers a in the (0,1) interval, the difference μ n ( a ), between the number of times that 1 appears in the first n digits in its binary expansion and n /2, obeys the law of iterative logarithms.
