Soviet mathematician. He made great achievements in function theory, number theory, and probability theory and their applications. He studied at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Moscow University from 1911 to 1916. He began teaching in 1918, and became a professor at Moscow University in 1927. Together with AN Kolmogorov, he built the foundations of the school's glory as the founder of the Moscow school of probability theory. His first paper published in 1916 was on integral theory, and his interest was in analysis for a while, but after 1922 he shifted to number theory and then probability theory. He rigorously proved that for almost all numbers a in the (0,1) interval, the difference μ _n ( a ), between the number of times that 1 appears in the first n digits in its binary expansion and n /2, obeys the law of iterative logarithms.

ソ連の数学者。関数論，数論そして確率論とその応用について偉大な業績を残した。1911‐16年までモスクワ大学数学物理学部で学ぶ。18年より教職につき，27年モスクワ大学教授となり，A.N.コルモゴロフとともに確率論モスクワ学派の創始者として，その栄光の礎を築いた。1916年に発表した彼の最初の論文は積分論に関するもので，興味はしばらく解析学にあったが，22年以後は数論，そして確率論に移っていった。(0,1)区間のほとんどすべての数aについて，その二進法展開ではじめのn位までに1の現れる回数とn/2との差μ_n(a)は，重複対数の法則，に従うことを厳密に証明した。
