White robes are worn over the clothing of those who serve in Shinto rituals. For example, the costume of the female attendants (uneme) who serve the offerings and attendants at the Daijo-e ceremony consists of a white kosode (short sleeved kimono) and red kiribakama (trousers), a white uchiki-like garment called eginu (pictured robe) with a grass and flower pattern painted in mud on a white background, and a karaginu-like short robe called namigoromo (wave robe) with a pale indigo background and a white blue sea wave pattern, which is then sprinkled with satsuma silk on top.
